Creating a CV That Gets Noticed

Recruiters and hiring managers can receive hundreds of applications, so your CV needs to make your experience clear quickly.

  • Start with a concise professional profile explaining who you are and what you offer.
  • Put your most recent experience first.
  • Focus on responsibilities and achievements relevant to the roles you’re targeting.
  • Include measurable results wherever possible – revenue generated, contracts won, team size, cost savings, productivity improvements or other tangible outcomes.
  • Include relevant qualifications, systems, licences and technical skills.
  • Check spelling, grammar, dates and contact details carefully.

Most importantly, keep it truthful. Your CV should sound like you and accurately represent your experience.

Using AI to Improve Your CV

AI tools such as ChatGPT can be extremely useful when creating or updating a CV but think of AI as your writing assistant, not your biographer.

Rather than asking AI simply to “write me a CV”, give it your genuine experience and ask it to help you communicate that experience more effectively.

Try This Prompt:

“I’m applying for the job description below. Here is my current CV. Compare the two and identify the experience and achievements I should emphasise. Suggest improvements to my wording, but don’t invent skills, qualifications or experience I haven’t provided.”

Another Useful Prompt:

“Review my CV as if you were recruiting for this position. What are the strongest reasons to interview me, and what gaps or concerns might a hiring manager identify?”

Never allow AI to add experience you don’t have. An impressive CV might secure an interview, but you’ll need to confidently discuss everything written on it.

Tailor Your CV to the Opportunity

Sending exactly the same CV for every vacancy isn’t always the best approach. Read the job description carefully and identify what appears most important to the employer. You don’t need to rewrite your entire career history every time – simply make the most relevant experience easy to see.

Preparing for an Interview

  • Research the company, its services, customers and market.
  • Read the job description again and identify the key skills and experience required.
  • Prepare examples demonstrating where you’ve delivered similar results.
  • Think about achievements, not simply responsibilities.
  • Prepare intelligent questions to ask.
  • For online interviews, test your camera, microphone and connection beforehand.
  • For in-person meetings, confirm the location, journey and expected arrival time.

If Zoom Recruitment has arranged your interview, your consultant can also help you understand the business, opportunity and interview process.

Use AI as Your Interview Coach

One of the best uses of AI during a job search is interview preparation. Give an AI tool the job description and ask it to act as the interviewer.

Try This:

“I’m interviewing for the position below. Act as the hiring manager and ask me 10 realistic interview questions based on the job description. Ask them one at a time and wait for my answer. After each answer, give me constructive feedback and suggest anything important I’ve missed.”

Add Your CV:

“Here is my CV and the job description for an interview I have coming up. Identify the areas of my experience the interviewer is most likely to explore and the questions I should prepare for.”

More Challenging Practice:

“Conduct a realistic interview for this role. Include some difficult follow-up questions and challenge any answers that are too vague. At the end, tell me my three strongest answers and the three areas I should improve before the real interview.”

The aim isn’t to memorise AI-generated answers – it is to become more comfortable talking naturally about your own experience.

Answering Competency Questions

Use the STAR structure: Situation – what was happening? Task – what were you responsible for? Action – what did you personally do? Result – what happened as a result?

AI Practice Prompt

“I’m preparing for a competency-based interview for the job below. Based on the requirements, suggest eight STAR-style questions I should prepare examples for.”

Researching an Employer

  • Company website and About page
  • LinkedIn company page
  • Recent company news
  • Products and services
  • Key competitors
  • The interviewer’s professional background where publicly available
  • Recent developments affecting the industry

AI Practice Prompt

“I’m interviewing with [company] for [position]. Based on the information I’ve provided below, help me identify five things I should understand about the business and suggest five thoughtful questions I could ask at interview.”

Always check important facts against reliable and current sources rather than assuming AI-generated information is correct.

LinkedIn Profile

  • Reflect your current CV and employment history.
  • Use a clear, professional headline.
  • Include relevant skills and sector terminology.
  • Use a suitable, current photograph.
  • Highlight significant achievements.
  • Avoid contradictions between LinkedIn and your CV.

Questions to Ask at Interview

  • What would success look like in the first six months?
  • What are the biggest priorities for the person joining this position?
  • Why is the position available?
  • How would you describe the team and management style?
  • What are the biggest challenges facing the department or business?
  • What opportunities are there for development?
  • For senior appointments: What would you want the successful person to have achieved after 12 months?

After Your Interview

Take a few minutes afterwards to note what went well, any questions you found difficult, whether the meeting changed how you feel about the opportunity, anything you forgot to mention and any further questions.

If Zoom Recruitment arranged the interview, contact your consultant as soon as possible afterwards. Your feedback helps us represent you properly when we speak with the employer and manage the next stage.

Technology has changed the way people search and prepare for jobs, but successful recruitment is still about people.

Use AI to research, practise, challenge your thinking and improve how you communicate your experience – but let your personality, experience and achievements remain your own.
